Ronald Archibald MCKINLAY

MCKINLAY, Ronald Archibald - Born in Toronto in 1924. Suddenly, Monday evening, June 11, at Muskoka Mills, Georgian Bay - his true heaven on earth. Loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. Survived by his wife, Hilda; children and spouses Henry and Yvonne McKinlay, Mildred and Brian Gillespie, Ronald (Bill) and Kimberly McKinlay, James McKinlay and Gina Elsley, grandchildren Jennifer, Andrew, Calum and Darcy; brother Alan and sister Carol Schnurr. He attended Lawrence Park Collegiate Institute and the University of Toronto, where he was one of the first group to pass through the University Naval Training Division at the University of Toronto before serving as an officer at sea in the Canadian Navy (RCNVR) during World War II. In 1949 he was graduated with a B.A.Sc. from the Faculty of Engineering University of Toronto, and in 1952 with an M.Com. from the Business School at the University of Toronto, and subsequently became a Certified Management Accountant. He held positions in industry with The Canadian Kodak Co. Ltd., Reliance Electric (Canada) Ltd. and the Coffield Washing Machine Co. Ltd. Subsequently he was Industrial Advisor for the Bank of Montreal, dealing with problem commercial and industrial accounts from Newfoundland to British Columbia. In 1966 he joined The Clarkson Co. Ltd., the trustee wing of what was then Clarkson Gordon, where he stayed until his first retirement in 1985, the last three years as Chairman. At the time of the bank and trust company failures in the 1980s, he was asked to chair the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation, where he stayed for seven and a half years, dealing with the problems involved in those failures. He retired for the second time, in 1992, but was then asked to join the Newcourt Credit Group as Chairman, where he remained until his last and final retirement in 1998. Some of his directorships were with Champion Road Machinery Ltd. in Goderich, Ontario, Canadian Life and Health Insurance Compensation Corp., Toronto, Nu-West Group Ltd., Calgary, and H & K Equipment Ltd., Toronto. He was a Fellow of the Institute of Canadian Bankers; a Fellow of the Society of Management Accountants, of which he was Ontario President and then Canadian President. He was also a member of the Senate of the University of Toronto for eight years. Although Ronald had many outside interests, his greatest was his membership of over fifty years in Metropolitan United Church in Toronto, where he was, for two separate periods, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. On his retirement from the Newcourt Credit Group, his retirement gift was an echo organ for the balcony of Metropolitan, adding to the church's glorious five-manual Casavant organ, which is one of the finest concert organs in Canada. Ronald and Hilda moved to Barrie, Ontario less than a year ago, to be closer to their cottage at Muskoka Mills, and it was there that he left us. There will be a private family service this week, and in the fall a memorial organ and choir concert at Metropolitan United Church in Toronto.
