SMITH, Charles F. - Charles Franklin Smith passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 18th, at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto in his 90th year. Son of the late Charlotte and Harold W. Smith, he was the beloved husband of the late Constance Munroe and loving father of Patricia Hillmer and Michael Smith (Laura). He will be dearly remembered by his grandchildren Michael Hillmer (Melinda), Charlotte and Roderick Smith. Also surviving are siblings Philip Smith (late Doris) Sudbury, Mabel Mitchell (Leslie), Napanee, Kathleen Williams (late William), and Lois Schmidt (Allan) of North Bay, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson Gregory Smith as well as brothers Harold, Chester, Keith, Donald and sister Grace Steed. Born and educated in North Bay, Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, serving in the RCAF. Following the war, he took advantage of the DVA program of educating servicemen and earned his Master of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Queen's University. He spent most of his career working as Vice President of the International Division of the Sperry, Vickers Corp. He traveled extensively in his position as General Manager of the European, African and Asian Division and retired in 1980 after which he and his wife Connie enjoyed the remaining years at their cherished home in Kingsway, Toronto, their villa in Portugal and summer home in Muskoka. A keen interest in genealogy inspired Mr. Smith to research his family background and then to write his own autobiography “I remember, I remember“, a copy of which can be found in the North Bay Public Library. A Memorial Service will be held at the Old Mill Inn Chapel in Toronto on Saturday, July 28th at 1 p.m.
