SARGENT, Fletcher “Bryan“ - After a courageous battle with cancer, Bryan died peacefully at Scollard Site on Friday August 10, 2007 surrounded by family and friends. Loving husband of Louise Elliott, in his 60th year. Proud father of David, Katie, and Ben, all at home. Dearly loved son of Mary Sargent and the late Bruce of Bancroft; and dear son-in-law of Mary Elliott and the late Tom of North Bay. Cherished brother of Joan Barrett, Jack (Diane), Arley (Doris), Wayne (Fern), and Paul (Kim). 'Uncle Bryan' will be sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. He will always be fondly remembered by his relatives and many close friends and former students. He was the treasurer for the North Bay lodge 271 of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Triple Link Senior Citizens Homes North Bay Inc., at the time of his passing. From a very young age, Bryan's love for sports was evident-baseball in the summers and hockey in the winters. He received numerous awards in both academics and sports by the time he graduated high school. An avid outdoors man, he spent many years canoeing and fishing, especially in Algonquin Park with special friends. He also enjoyed spending the last twenty summers on Lake Talon at the family cottage. Bryan was in the first graduating class of the Co-operative Kinesiology program at the University of Waterloo. His work terms were spent working in the recreation department of several Ontario Hospitals for physically and mentally challenged children and adults. There he met, Harry, Joan, Cathy, and David Nelson who became a second family to him. He graduated in 1971 with a B.Sc. (Honours Kinesiology), attended the College of Education at the University of Toronto, and was successful with his first teaching job application to a new senior elementary school, Silver Birches, as a Phys. Ed. Teacher. He spent much of his time coaching teams. Many students thrived under his tutelage and Silver Birches became well known and extremely successful for its strong athletic endeavours. Bryan retired from 31 years of teaching and coaching, all at Silver Birches Senior School in 2003. He continued to help coach school sports, especially basketball, until the time of his illness. He began and ran the Nipissing/Near North District Elementary Senior School Track Meets for 31 years and helped co-ordinate the start up of the Regional District Track Meets prior to his retirement. He also helped coach in the Triple A Hockey program with his best friend, Bill Wright. They coached many of the same kids from their age of 7 to the age of 16. Their teams were NOHA champions numerous times. For all of his contributions to sport, Bryan was the proud and honoured recipient of the Al Brennan Award at the Sports Hall of Fame dinner in 2005. Of all the awards and accolades, he cherished the simple acts of kindness and thanks from former students, friends, colleagues and family.
