LARGE, JOHN KERR - 83, of North Head, Grand Manan, N.B. passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, September 1st, at the Grand Manan Hospital. John was born at Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England on November 26th, 1923. He was the youngest son of the late Thomas and Aimee (Poiner) Large. After receiving his schooling at the local schools, in 1939 he articled to an Architect in Mansfield. In 1942 he volunteered for the armed services and was commissioned in 1943 to the Royal Engineers and during the next four years he served in India, Assam, Singapore, and Malaya, subsequently attained the rank of Major. He was discharged in 1947, and then resumed his education receiving his degree in Architecture in 1949. John worked in Nigeria, England, Iran, Kuwait, Bahrain, Trucial States, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. He joined in a partnership with a friend in Rothesay in 1961, later opening his own firm in Saint John in 1974 until his retirement 1990. John served on many boards and groups during his lifetime, some of which were; President of the Architects Association of N.B., and seven years as Secretary / Registrar. He was a Fellow of the RAIC, and a founding member and chairman of the Certification Board. He retired and moved to Grand Manan 1990 where he became very involved in community affairs and service clubs. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #44, a very active and dedicated member of the Grand Manan Rotary Club. John was awarded The Paul Harris International Fellowship Award 2002 for his exceptional dedication and service to the community through the club. He is survived by his wife, Freda Margaret (Lea) Large at home; two step daughters, Rosemary Anne Holland-Drummond (Craig) of Victoria, B.C., Julia M. Holland (Michael) of Truro, NS.; and one step-granddaughter, Rebecca.; one brother, David Clive Large, of England.; one cousin, Margaret. The family will receive friends and relatives at Ells Funeral Home on Tuesday 2-4 PM, 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held from the Church of the Ascension on Wednesday 1:30 PM with Rev. Dana Dean officiating. A reception will follow the service at Covert Hall. The family has requested that memorial donations be made to the Church of the Ascension Memorial Fund.
