AUSTIN, Percy Russell 19 April 1946 15 August 2007 It is with great sorrow that we announce the death of Percy Russell Austin of Victoria, aged 61, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, in Victoria, after a prolonged illness. He leaves behind his much-loved wife, Thelma Schrock of Abbotsford, B.C. and daughter Mattie Schrock, three brothers: Lawrence (Larry) Austin (Christine) of Vancouver, Richard (Dick) Austin (Susan) of Saanich, B.C., Les Austin (Melanie) of Victoria and a sister in Nanaimo, Chirlee Ciofani (Gus). His parents, William Edward (Bill) and Elizabeth Austin, long time residents of James Bay, Victoria, predeceased him. Percy was born on 19 April, 1946 in Victoria and attended Vic High (1960 to 1964) and later the University of Victoria (B.A.) and Simon Fraser University where he received his Bachelor of Education (1970). After a 30-year career in education, which took him to Sparwood, Prince Rupert, Tahsis and lastly Abbotsford, Percy retired in 2005. As well as a career in the classroom he also served as president of the Abbotsford Teachers' Association and as a member of the B.C. College of Teachers. Percy loved to travel with every trip quickly turning into an adventure. Percy returned to Victoria in 2006 and loved to walk in Beacon Hill Park and loved to delight in the beauty of the Straits of Juan de Fuca. He will be sorely missed by his family and loyal friends especially Wanda and Ed Brown (Vancouver), Pam and Doug Canty (100 Mile), David Hobson and Janet Povey (Nanaimo), as well as Julie and Garry McCaig (Port Alberni). A memorial gathering will be held on 16 September at the Interfaith Chapel at the University of Victoria at 3.00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society in his name.
