BARNE, May (nee Wilding) October 19, 1915 August 13, 2007 May passed away peacefully at age 91 in the presence of family, at Berwick House in Victoria. She was born in Vancouver in 1915 and grew up there and in Victoria. Her parents emigrated from London, England, and were among several relatives who settled in British Columbia in the early 1900s. In 1936, she married Gordon Albert Barne, her husband for 64 years until his death in September 2000. During World War II the couple moved from Vancouver with their two young sons to Air Force bases across the country, including Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and, after the war, the tight-knit community of Gimli, Manitoba. In the 1960s, they moved with their daughter from Winnipeg to Comox, BC, and eventually settled on the Somass River in Port Alberni in 1965. May was an industrious homemaker, cook and baker, admired for her intelligence, thrift, and the ease with which she hosted large gatherings. She and Gordon gave many hours to their church and were guardians in the Job's Daughters organization. May also volunteered at West Coast General Hospital in Port Alberni. The couple retired to Victoria in the late 1970s, where they were active in their church and had many friends. May leaves her daughter Laura Rose Beswick of Nanaimo and sons Thomas Russell Barne of Victoria and Gordon Albert Barne of Seattle, Washington, six grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Besides her loving husband, Gordon, she was predeceased by two sisters, Daisy Magnall of Seattle, Washington, and Rose Wilding of Victoria, and a granddaughter, Annalu. Special thanks goes to the caring staff at Berwick House. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21, at McCall Bros. Floral Chapel, Johnson and Vancouver Streets. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice. 400160 Published in the Victoria Times-Colonist from 8/17/2007 - 8/18/2007.
