Holland Kirkpatrick BATE

BATE, Holland Kirkpatrick January 8, 1922 August 12, 2007 H.K. (Pat) Bate died suddenly in the early hours of August 12th. He is survived by Angela, his loving wife of sixty years; son, Ian; daughter, Deborah; daughter, Lexi; sister, Barbara; his two grandchildren, Benjamin and Eleanore Hilliard; and his son-in-law, David McElderry. Pat was predeceased by his sister, Joan. Pat Bate was born in St. Joseph's Hospital in Victoria, B.C. in 1922. He studied at St. Michael's University School and Brentwood College. As a young man he joined the Canadian Artillery where he rose to the rank of captain and served during World War II in France and then occupied Germany. In 1947 he had the good fortune to marry his best friend and life-long partner, Angela. Pat was one of the last lawyers to article for the bar in British Columbia, to which he was admitted in 1948. He had a general law practice in Victoria from 1948 to 1955. During this time he was elected to the Saanich Council (as the youngest member ever) and served for three years. He was also on the board of Directors at the Royal Jubilee Hospital. In 1956, Pat and his family moved to California where he built a consulting practice. Eventually he returned to Victoria where he and Angela retired in 1979. Pat lived a rich and full life. He especially enjoyed boating and sailing; he had a life-long interest in model trains and was an avid stamp collector. He was well known for his passionate interest in politics. He was a man generous in spirit and unfailingly devoted to those he loved. He will be especially missed by his grandchildren, Ben and Elea, who knew him as "Granfer " and for whom he was a source of support, inspiration, and guidance. A private family service will be held at the Holy Trinity Church in North Saanich.
