De MONTIGNY "Ray" Joseph Louis Real Passed away peacefully August 27, 2007 at the Priory Extended Care Unit, with his family by his side. Born October 11, 1923 at Ponteix, Saskatchewan. Ray was the eldest son of Hector and Jeanne and brother to Monty and Carmel Sapala, who all predeceased Ray. Ray and his family moved to Cobble Hill, BC at the age of thirteen. In 1940 he and his family made Victoria their home. That same year, Ray enlisted in the Canadian Scottish Regiment. He served as an infantry field medic for four years across Europe until being wounded by a sniper. He was also a life long member of the Royal Canadian Legion #7 Britannia. He returned to Victoria where he married his loving wife Sue of 60 years. Together they had five children: Diane (Bob) Barker of Duncan, BC, Gail Mitchell (Maurice) of Parksville, BC, Carol Dunsmuir of Victoria, BC, Wayne (Doranne) of Campbell River, BC, Ken (Amanda) Victoria, BC. He also lived for and loved dearly his 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews. Ray and his wife Sue owned and operated a janitorial-maintenance company, that looked after several shopping centres, banks, salons and had a 26-year contract with BC Forest Products in Victoria, until he retired. Ray gave many young people their first job. Those who had the pleasure to meet Dad knew he was a gentle man, who always was ready to lend a hand and loved to tell a joke or two. He was so proud to return to Holland for the 50th Anniversary of the liberation of Holland where Canadian documentary film crew created a TV movie called Ray Remembers. The highlight of the trip was being awarded a medal from Queen Beatrix of Holland for his part in the liberation. Our family would like to thank all of Dad's doctors, nurses and care givers that have been so kind to Dad over the last several years. A special thank you to the staff at the Priory who made Dad's final months and days so special. Memorial Service will be held at Sands of Colwood 317 Goldstream Ave. Victoria on Saturday September 1, 2007 at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations maybe made in Ray's memory to the B.C. Children's Hospital. Condolences maybe offered at www.sandsfuneral.com 403994 Published in the Victoria Times-Colonist from 8/30/2007 - 8/31/2007.
