DOBSON, Mary Josephine (nee Fox) Born December 18, 1912 in Kelowna, B.C., died peacefully September 7, 2007 at the Chemainus Health Care Centre. Predeceased by her husband Jack in 1991, parents Charles James and Julia Mary Ellen Fox, and brothers Lionel and Charlie. Survived by her daughter Sheila Protti (Ray) and son Lionel; grandsons Michel (Casey) and Nicholas Protti, and greatgranddaughter Claire Protti. Joe's early life was spent in Kelowna, Bournemouth, and Chilliwack. She arrived in Duncan in 1935 to assist the resident public health nurses at the health centre on Ingram Street. In 1937, she married Jack Dobson and, for the next 54 years supported him in his business, various interests, and in his 24 years of public life as an alderman and then mayor of Duncan. Always involved in the community, Joe was an active member of the WA and ACW at St. John's Church, IODE (of which she was a life member), Rotary Anns, Queen Margaret's School parents' association, Maple Bay Yacht Club, and Peers Counselling. She was happiest when occupied with volunteer projects, socializing with friends (especially parties with dancing), or pursuing her interests of badminton, hiking, gardening, reading, cooking, sewing, sailing on the Idler II with Jack, and the companionship of her various dogs and cats. Her travels included driving across Canada with her parents in 1924 in a Model T, trips with Jack to New Zealand and Australia, the UK and Europe, and to Ontario to visit her grandsons. Warm thanks to Sanita Cabrera for her years of care, and to the Chemainus Health Care Centre staff and volunteers for their compassionate and caring attention over the past 2 years. Memorial service Thursday, September 13, 2 p.m., St. John's Anglican Church, 486 Jubilee St., Duncan. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA, Alzheimer's Association, or the Chemainus Health Care Centre.
