SMITS, Helen (Jan 8, 1919-Sept. 13. 2007) Our Mom, Grandma, Aunt and dear friend passed away on the evening of Sept 13, 2007 with her son Koos at her side. She had served tea that afternoon and then around 6:30 P.M. suddenly had a stroke and left us a few hours later. Helen was born in Delft the Netherlands and came to Canada in 1963. In 2000, she moved back to Holland to be close to her son Koos. Mom was known for her love of life, always a happy time with family or with a stranger she would happen to meet on the bus to the Pen Centre. She made the most of every moment. Her talent for embroidery, knitting and crochet was so natural. She would see a sweater, in a store then go home, design it and knit it. She loved to play cards and was often seen playing in tournaments in St. Catharines. She had three children from her first marriage with Gerard Post who suddenly died in 1953. She found a second love, John Smits who had nine children and they married in 1963. She was small in stature just below 5 feet but to many of us, large in character and loving to all of her children and grandchildren and friends. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday Oct 5, in St. Julia Church, 215 Glenridge Avenue, St. Catharines, and interment at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens, 2250 Highway 20, Fonthill, then lunch at St. Julia Church Parish Hall.
