KONING, Joan Marie (nee McFadden) - A resident of Chatham, Joan Koning died Wednesday October 3, 2007 at her residence at the age of 72. Born in Chatham to the late Richard and Verna McFadden. Wife of 53 years to James “Jim”. Mother to Maureen E. Elliott, Lynne A. Hovey and her husband Daryl, Rick and his wife Dar Harvey. Proud grandmother to her 7 grandchildren- Joshua, Kristen, Joel, Natasha, Melissa, Rebecca and Tristan. Sister-in-law to Joyce and Mac Hepburn, Gerald and Sharon Koning. Predeceased by her son-in-law Dr. Mark Elliott and her brother R. Graham McFadden. Joan spent most of her life as a homemaker raising her three children. Childhood illnesses resulted in a damaged heart that created problems throughout her adult life but nevertheless she assisted her husband Jim in the family printing company when she could. She had a life-long love of music from her teen years as a member of a triple trio at First Presbyterian Church to her later years with St. Paul's Congregational Church Choir. Her love of music led her to support Channel 56 Detroit Public Television and she was their guest on two occasions at private concerts given by her favourite orchestra 'Andre Rieu and the Johann Straus Orchestra' .She was a past member of the Chatham Jaycettes and served as the Ontario leader of this auxiliary for one term. Joan served for many years with the Kiwanis Music Festival; first as a desk secretary and then in the Festival office. Family and friends will be received at the Funeral Home on Friday from 2-4:30 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service to held on Saturday, October 6, 2007 at St. Paul's Congregational Church, 450 Park Avenue West, Chatham at 1:30 p.m. Interment to follow at Maple Leaf Cemetery. As your expression of sympathy, memorial donations to the Sleeping Children around the World Fund, Children's Hospital Foundation of Western Ontario or the Multiple Sclerosis Society would be appreciated by the family.
