MERRITHEW, W. FREDERICK (FRED) - W. Frederick (Fred) Merrithew, of Fredericton, NB, husband of Marie (Gallagher) Merrithew, passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital on October 5, 2007, very shortly after being diagnosed with late stage lung cancer. Born on December 7, 1931, he was a son of the late William and Retta (McCoy) Merrithew. In addition to his wife of 52 years, Fred is survived by two daughters, Deb (Joe Owens) of London, ON and Connie Merrithew (Kevin Deeprose) of Toronto, ON; one son, Michael (Louise de Grandpre) and grandsons, Jason, Patrick and David; all of Toronto, ON; sister, Eleanor (Ralph Pugh) of Lakeland, FL; and two brothers, Earl Merrithew (Helen) and George Merrithew (Phyllis), of Fredericton; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, Fred was predeceased by two brothers, Stanley Merrithew and Edward Merrithew. Visitation will be held at the York Funeral Home, 302 Brookside Drive on Sunday, October 7, 2007 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. As a graduate Civil Engineer from UNB, Fred dedicated his career to the design and construction of numerous buildings, petro-chemical refineries, nuclear power plants, schools and shopping centers in Ontario, Atlantic Canada and in the Middle East. With his own special management style, a particularly fastidious attention to detail, a dogged determination to deadlines and problem solving, and a commitment to excellence, he established a reputation as a consummate professional. Fred loved nature and the outdoors, spending time there during his lifetime with family and friends; walking, hunting, fishing, painting or just exploring the back roads and forests (and desert) everywhere he lived and travelled. He was genuinely concerned about the environment and supported several groups dedicated to conservation. A celebration of Fred's unique brand of life will be held at St. Margaret's Church at 775 Forest Hill Road, Skyline Acres at 2 pm on Monday, October 8, 2007 with Rev. Jon Lownds officiating. Everyone is invited to a reception at the Delta Hotel on the Woodstock Road in the Dining Room from 3-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the University of New Brunswick, Fred Merrithew Memorial Scholarship to be awarded to an Engineering Student pursuing Environmental Studies in his memory. UNB Memorial Gift Cards are available at most funeral homes or issue a cheque payable to: University of New Brunswick, Fred Merrithew Memorial Scholarship. Forward to: University of New Brunswick, Office of Development and Donor Relations, P.O. Box 4400, Fredericton, NB E3B 5A3. The family would like to thank the Fredericton Fire and EMT personnel who assisted with his transfer to the hospital and to the doctors and nursing staff in the Emergency and Palliative Care Departments of the Dr. Everett Chalmers Regional Hospital. In addition, the family would like to thank, Dr. James McKim, Dr. Tom Peters and Dr. Susan Smith. October 06, 2007
