SAGERT, Peter - (b. November 4, 1945) loved a challenge; his two year struggle with cancer was among the most difficult he dealt with in his life, which ended peacefully at his North Vancouver home on October 10, 2007. Raised in Niagara Falls, even as a small child Peter knew there was something wrong about the pervasive smell and taste of steel mills in the region. As he grew, he also saw the need for industry. This awareness led him to his life goal: to help industry and environment coexist in harmony. After completing a degree in mechanical engineering at Queens (1969) and a master's in atmospheric studies at Colorado State (1971), he became an early member of the environmental group of the BC government. He went on to work as an air management engineer at BC Hydro before becoming an air quality management consultant. As principal of Cirrus Consultants for almost 25 years, this role, and his commitment to his work, took him throughout the province and overseas. At times he talked about early retirement, but there was always another project, another challenge, to take on. He is survived by his wife Jean, who lovingly nursed him through his long illness; his sister, Sandra; his three children - Pamela, John, and Laura (Miguel Angel) - who have been an immense source of pride, support, and love especially throughout this difficult time; and Mel and Leo, his two lovely, lively grandchildren in Mexico City. Predeceased by his beloved dog, Bear, as his strength waned, Peter found comfort both in his faith in his Lord and in the idea that death would, in some way, find him walking again with Bear on the North Shore mountains he called home for 33 years. Peter and his family want to thank Drs. P. Klimo and S. Chow, the in-hospital (Lions Gate) and community healthcare professionals with whom he came in contact for their care and support. No funeral by request. Peter asked instead that we share the following thoughts with you: “Throughout my working life I sought to balance the need for industry and the need to protect the world we live in. This is a responsibility we all share. In my personal life, I came to fully understand, perhaps later than I should have, the importance of taking responsibility for our own lives and taking time to let our family know how much we love them. For this reason, it would be most meaningful to me if you were to remember me not with a ceremony but by working less, playing more, taking care of your health, and spending more time with your family. Thank you. Pete.” Good night, Max. 10862908
