Stanley (Stan) Edward Paul September 20, 1924 - October 29, 2000 Funeral arrangements by Smith's Funeral Service (Guelph Line) Born September 20, 1924, St. Thomas, Ontario, passed away suddenly at the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital, Burlington, Ontario on Sunday, October 29, 2000. Stan Paul of Burlington, age 76 years. Son of the late Edward and Hazel Paul. Beloved husband for 54 years of Dorothy Pearl (nee Lewis) Paul. Dear father of Lewis Paul and his partner Lynda Johnston of Woodstock, Cheryl Larson and her husband Larry of St. Thomas, Brenda Paul and her friend James Gowler of London, Ontario, Catharine Suzanne Paul and her husband Dan Shorey of Mississauga and James Paul and his partner Catherine Lloyd of Milton. Loving grandpa of fifteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Brother of Vera Beatty and her husband James of St. Thomas. Stan will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by Mary Paul and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his daughter-in-law Carol Paul. Stan was a Naval Veteran, HMCS Orillia, a member of the Naval Association Burlington Branch, and a former employee of the United Way, Hamilton. Stan had been a counsellor at the Ontario School for the Deaf in Milton before taking on the job of Regional Employment Officer with the Canadian Hearing Society in 1968. Selected to establish a CHS office in Hamilton, Stan spent the first eight months of his job alone on Barton Street East, in facilities rented by the Hamilton and District Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Until 1972, Stan was responsible for the entire Hamilton Region (consisting of Hamilton-Wentworth, Haldimand, Norfolk, Halton, Brant, Wellington, Lincoln, Niagara and Waterloo regions) himself. As Regional Officer, Stan was instrumental in developing and expanding employment and welfare services for deaf and hard of hearing people in this region. His "frontline" work finding job placements and interpreting for clients met one of the primary needs of the community as identified by clients, parents and the organization itself. While he readily admitted that he had no idea of the scope of the job and its responsibilities when he was hired, Stan felt that he did succeed in creating a viable service committed to job placement with potential for growth and development. Stan taught Sign Language at Mohawk College for over 20 years, was Interpreter for the hearing impaired, Board Member of Burlington Seniors Centre, former President and Field Representative of Zone 13 of United Senior Citizens of Ontario, served on Cam Jackson's Committee for the International Year of the Older Person, Former Warden and active member of St. George's Anglican Church in Lowville, former member of the Canadian Association of Rehabilitation Personnel, and former President and Governor of the Canadian Progress Club. As a former resident of St. Thomas, Stan had been active as a Cub and Scout leader, Lieutenant with the Sea Cadets, Union Steward of #4990 Steelworkers and was a former member of the St. Thomas Labour Council. Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333) on Wednesday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. where Funeral Service will be held in the Chapel on Thursday, November 2, 2000 at 11 a.m. The Reverend Canon Charles Masters officiating.
