Michal SZYPOWSKI

SZYPOWSKI, Michal January 4, 1919 - November 1, 2007 Veteran of WWII, Polish 1st Armoured Division Passed away at Kingston General Hospital in the arms of his loved ones on Thursday, November 1, 2007. Beloved husband of 60 years of Julia, who passed away on September 7, 2007. Devoted and loving father of Tadzio Ted and Krysia Krystyna. He will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Patrick (Natalie) and Ryan (Jillian); his great-granddaughters Kaileigh and Leanna. Survived by his sisters Anna and Helena, and his brother Stefan (Bronislawa). He will always be fondly remembered by his family (here and in Europe), friends, and all who knew him. We will all miss his laugh, his jokes, his prowess at weaving a fascinating story, as well as the multitude of Do-It-Yourself tips he was always quick to share with everyone. Special thanks go to Nurse Lin James and the wonderful PSW team at ParaMed who contributed to Michal's care and comfort these past few years, as well as to nurses Kathy and Fiona of the ECU team at KGH who provided such remarkable care in his final hours. Michal had a very full life, replete with many joys as well as many sorrows and hardships. He was wounded in action at the onset of World War II and then survived 4 years in a German Prisoner-of-War camp before escaping and joining the Polish forces under British command. At the close of the war, Michal found himself in England, facing the heartbreaking fact that Poland had been swallowed up as a satellite state of the USSR and he no longer had a homeland to return to. It would be 30 years before he saw the siblings that had stayed behind in Poland. While in England, Michal met the love of his life, Julia, the sister of his best friend. They married and a year later set off with their infant son, Tadzio, to another adventure - a new life in Canada. They spent the first 22 years in Montreal, and then settled in Kingston, where they have lived for 36 years. Family and friends will be received at the TOWNSHIP CHAPEL of the GORDON F. TOMPKINS FUNERAL HOMES, 435 Davis Drive (Centennial Drive and Taylor Kidd Blvd.), (613) 546-5150 on Friday, November 16th from 2-4 & 7-9 pm, and again on Saturday, November 17th from 10-12 pm. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph's Church, 392 Palace Road, on Saturday, November 17th at 12:30 pm. Private burial of the cremated remains will take place at a later date. Following the mass, Ted and Krystyna will receive family and friends at Aunt Lucy's Restaurant, 1399 Princess Street (corner Portsmouth Avenue). In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Alzheimer's Society in the name of Julia and Michal would be greatly appreciated. 10889294
