KOIVU, Vilho (Bill) Frank 1926 - 2007 - V. Bill Koivu passed peacefully to his eternal rest on the morning of October 24th, 2007 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital, Memorial Site. An active, vital and busy man for all but a few months of his 81 years, he will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. A lifelong resident of the Sudbury area, Bill was born to Frank and Elli Koivu (nee Viitanen) both pre-deceased on June 27, 1926 in Levack, Ontario and married Aura (Liinamaa) Koivu in Sudbury in 1950. At the time of Aura's passing in 2006, she and Bill had been married for 56 years. Bill is survived by his son Brian, his daughter Brenda (Liimatainen), his son-in-law Allan Liimatainen, his daughter-in-law Ann (nee Cebasek) and two grandsons David Liimatainen and Matthew Koivu. He was predeceased by two of his children Sheila (1951) and David (1962), his brother Tuure (Ted) Koivu (1985) and by his step-mother Hilma Koivu (1983). He will be remembered by many including his sisters-in-law Aira Rauhanen and Arlene Manninen and his brother-in-law Arvo Liinamaa as well as many nieces and nephews. Bill retired from INCO in 1991 after 44 years of service. He was a churchman of the first order and a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Sudbury. His Masonic affiliations were extensive, he was a life member and Past Master of Algonquin Lodge, 536 AF&AM GRC, a Past Grand Steward of the Grand Lodge of Canada in the Province of Ontario, a Past Patron of Algoma Chapter 139 order of the Eastern Star, a member and Past TPGM of the Sudbury and District Lodge of Perfection AASR, a member of the North Bay Chapter Rose Croix, the Barrie Consistry, Tuscan Chapter 95, RAM, Rameses Temple AAONMA and the Sudbury Shrine Club. Bill was a man whose love of music was exemplified by his active involvement over many decades both as a singer and administrator with the Sudbury Finnish Male Choir. In his later years, he was the driving force behind the annual Multi-cultural Christmas Around the World concert. Many community organizations and events benefited from his talents as an organizer and as somebody who really knew how to get things done. Bill was a avid cross-country skier and golfer and was known to cheer on the Sudbury Wolves, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Blue Jays on occasion. He was a treasure to his family who loved him and will dearly miss him. Funeral services will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (189 Regent Street South) on Saturday, October 27th, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. He will be resting at the JACKSON AND BARNARD FUNERAL HOME with visitation on Friday, October 26th, 2007 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Masonic Memorial Service will be conducted under the auspices of Algonquin Lodge 536 on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. We will all cherish his memory in our hearts. In lieu of flowers donations to the Memorial Fund of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church or the Sudbury Finnish Resthome Society would be appreciated.
