LANGHORNE (Beck), Elva M. - 96, died in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on September 1st, 2007. She was predeceased by her husband Norman Langhorne, father Charles Beck and mother Ellen Riddell Beck. Elva and Norman did not have any children but enjoyed the company of many nieces and nephews from the Beck, Riddell, Scharf, King and Langhorne families. One of her nephews is a former Dean, Mohawk College, Brant Campuses - Ralph Scharf. Elva's family on her father's side settled in Salem, in 1823, moving from Pennsylvania to the area near Elora soon to be called Canada. Her mother's family, Thomas and Hellen Riddell moved from Scotland to Canada in the 1870's. The Scottish Society of St. George sponsored the family and some of their children attended the Stone School RR4 Cambridge. Elva was a member of the University of Saskatchewan Women's Hockey Team - 1927-29. She was also an avid curler and golfer and was one of the organizers of the first Ladies Curling Bonspiel in Brantford. Elva organized the first Welcome Wagon service in Smith Falls and was the area co- coordinator. She was the last surviving member of her family. Her brother and sisters Charlie, Ella, Mabel, and Bessie all predeceased her. Elva was an active member of the Anglican Church, Order of The Daughters of the Empire and a lifelong supporter of any effort to improve the economic and social life of Brantford. A memorial service will be held in the DENNIS TOLL FUNERAL HOME, 55 Charing Cross St., Brantford on Wednesday, October 24th at 1:30 p.m. Interment of her ashes will be carried out through a family service.
