Jennifer SERKOWNAK

VICKERS: Jennifer May 9, 1924 - May 23, 2006 Jennifer passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on May 23rd, 2006 at the Continuing Care facility in Drumheller. Jennie was born May 9, 1924 in Drumheller to Joseph and Mary Serkownak. She was raised in Newcastle where she worked along side her parents in the garden, delivering milk and whatever other chores needed to be done. Although times were hard her parents wanted their children well educated. Jennie received her education at the cottages in Newcastle, Central School, and Drumheller High School. After graduating in 1943 she was off to Business College in Calgary. There she received her Secretary and Business Administration Certificate. After graduating from the college she worked at the Greyhound Bus Depot in Calgary. The next year Jennie was asked by Mr. Poxon to come back to Drumheller and work in his Red Bus Lines office. Jennie next went to work for N.B. Vickers at the Hardware Store. While working at the store Jennie met the love of her life. Jennie and Blake were married October 2, 1946. They were blessed with 5 children: Billy, Nelson, Mary, Jack, and Joan. She devoted her life to Blake, their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her family, Jennie always made time for her friends especially Edna Anderson, Susie Thomas and the rest of the birthday club. She also volunteered with the United Church Women’s group. Jennie worked hard, helping to harvest the crops, tending to her garden, and took pride in working at “Vickers Pharmacy”. She leaves to mourn her loss, her loving husband Blake of 60 years, her children Nelson (Mary Anne), Mary (Dale) Hobbs, Jack (Val) and Joan (Rick) Nelson. Grandchildren: Elizabeth (Jeff) Zacharuk, Camille, Erin, Cassandra and Blake; Travis (Jennifer) Hobbs, David (Tracy) Hobbs and Jennifer Hobbs; Megan and Joe Vickers; Alana (Michael) Rees and Matthew Nelson. Great grandchildren: Sydney, Payton, and Cayden Zacharuk. Her brother-in-law Bruce Vickers and many nieces, nephews and friends will fondly remember her. Her son Billy in 1951, her parents, her brother Edward Serkownak, and sister-in-law Sina Vickers all predeceased Jennie. The family wishes to thank Dr. Racz and the wonderful staff at the Drumheller Continuing Care Center, who gave her the best care possible. A funeral service was held Saturday, May 27 at the Knox United Church, Drumheller. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the charity of their choosing.
