At the age of seventeen he played professional soccer for the Norwich City Football Club in England. He served in the Royal Corps of Signals in the British Army during the Korean War. In 1953 David and his bride Georgina immigrated to Canada, settling in the Peterborough area. He first worked at J.K. Hughs Motors, for a short time with Jack McGee and then many years with Don Earle Ltd. as Service Manager until Multiple Sclerosis forced his retirement in 1982. David spent most of his recreational time involved with the Peterborough and District Soccer League. He played with the UEW Soccer Club from 1954 to 1975. In 1970 he became involved in the Peterborough Minor Soccer league coaching his son's team for many years. The highlight of which was taking his 'Don Earle Dusters' to England in 1979. David was a founding member of the Ontario Soccer Coaches Association. He pioneered both Men's and Women's soccer at Sir Sanford Fleming College and coached at this institution for over 25 years. David has received several Civic Sports Awards and in 1977 received the Sportsman of the Year Award from the City of Peterborough and in 1987 he received a Certificate of Merit from the Government of Canada in recognition for his contribution to his community. David won four Coach of the Year Awards and in 1985 he received an honour award in recognition of being selected as Eastern Division Coach of the Year from the OCAA. He was a member of the Corinthian Masonic Lodge # 101. David has spent the last 10 years living with his daughter and her family in Pickering. While he was able he was a regular member of the Whitby Rangers Supporters Club. The last match he watched saw his favoured Rangers unseating the Celtic with a 3-0 win on October 20. A beloved husband, David was predeceased by his wife Georgina in 1996; he was the loving father and father-in-law of Linda Hardie and Bill Coons of Pickering, Karen Hardie and Terry Ferguson of Lindsay, Scott and Susan Hardie of Ajax and cherished grandfather of Brandon and Courtney Coons and Jordan and Alexa Hardie.
