Abbie Grant McLellan Abbie Grant McLellan, 96, passed away peacefully at Northwood Centre on October 26, 2007. Abbie was born in Glace Bay on March 28, 1911. She was the youngest of seven children of Isabelle (MacLean) and Absalom Beaton. She was a registered nurse who trained at the Glace Bay General Hospital. Following graduation, she took a post graduate course in Surgical Nursing at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. She worked as a staff nurse in hospitals in Glace Bay, Halifax and New Jersey. During the Second World War she was a nursing sister in the Army. She was predeceased by husbands, Charles MacDonald and Neil McLellan and Neil's daughter Fay (Dr. Kenneth MacLennan) McLellan and Fay's daughter Barbara (Larry) Spears. Abbie was also predeceased by her sisters, Nan MacPherson and Pearl Muggah; brothers, Ernie, Freeman, Jim and Clarence Beaton. Abbie is survived by daughters, Betty (Dr. John) Anderson, Halifax and Joan (Terry) Steeves, Florida; grandchildren, Heather (Justin) McDonough and David Anderson, Halifax and Fay's children, Cathy (John) Snow, Dartmouth, Libby Coady, Shauna MacLennan, Halifax, Ginny (Richard) Todd, New Glasgow, David MacLennan, Petite Riviere and Scottie (Debbie) MacLennan, Burlington, Ont. and their children; her sister, Pearl's daughter, Anne (Lorne) Butler and family as well as several other nieces and nephews. Abbie took great joy in her great-grand children, Abbie Jean, Lauchlan and Elizabeth McDonough. Abbie was an active member of St. Andrew's United Church, U.C.W. and was a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House and more recently at Northwood where she lived very happily for the past eight years. She was a member of the Nursing Sisters' Association of Canada. A special thank you to Dr. Graeme Bethune her physician and friend, and the wonderful staff of 9 Manor and 2 Centre at Northwood. A visitation will be held at Snow's Funeral Home on Sunday, October 28, 7 to 9 pm. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's United Church, Coburg Rd., Halifax on Monday, October 29 at 1 pm, Rev. Dr. Russell Daye officiating. A reception will follow in the Church Hall.
