LAMER, Antonio Le très honorable Antonio Lamer P.C., C.C., C.D. 1933 - 2007 Le 24 novembre 2007, à l'âge de 74 ans, est décédé paisiblement à l'Institut de cardiologie de l'Université d'Ottawa l'ex-juge en chef du Canada. Fils de feu Me Antonio Lamer, c.r., et feu Florence Storey, il laisse dans le deuil son épouse bien-aimée Danièle Tremblay-Lamer, son fils Stéphane (Yvonne Maringo), sa belle-fille Mélanie Bérard (Guillermo Rodriguez), son beau-fils Jean-Frédéric Bérard (Geneviève Bourbonnais), ses petits-enfants Catherine, Stéphanie, Anthony, Laurence, Alexandre et Emmanuel, ses beaux-parents Marcellin et Laurette Tremblay, ses belles-soeurs Louise et Ghislaine, ses beaux-frères Michel et André, ainsi que de nombreux amis. Né à Montréal, il fait ses études au Collège de Saint-Laurent et à l'Université de Montréal (LL.L.), est admis au Barreau du Québec en 1957, pratique le droit, en particulier avec Me Philip Cutler et Me Jacques Bellemare, c.r., est professeur agrégé à la Faculté de droit de l'Université de Montréal et chargé de cours en criminologie, est fondateur de l'Association des avocats de la défense de la province de Québec, est président national de la section de la justice pénale de l'Association du Barreau canadien, est nommé juge à la Cour supérieure le 19 décembre 1969, est élu président de la Société de criminologie du Québec et membre du conseil d'administration de la Fondation canadienne des droits de l'homme en juin 1974, est nommé vice-président de la Commission canadienne de réforme du droit en 1971 et président de cette Commission en avril 1976, est nommé à la Cour d'appel du Québec le 17 mars 1978 et à la Cour suprême du Canada le 28 mars 1980, est nommé Juge en chef du Canada le 1er juillet 1990, président du Conseil canadien de la magistrature, président du Conseil consultatif de l'Ordre du Canada, président du Conseil d'administration de l'Institut national de la magistrature, est membre du Conseil privé du Canada, conseiller honoraire, Lincoln's Inn, Londres, 1990, reçoit l'Ordre du mérite de l'Université de Montréal en 1991, est chevalier de Justice, Ordre de Saint-Jean, 1993, colonel honoraire du Governor General's Foot Guards et est nommé Compagnon de l'Ordre du Canada en 2001. La dépouille d'Antonio Lamer sera exposée en chapelle ardente à la Cour suprême du Canada, mercredi le 28 novembre de 14 h 30 à 17 h. Son of Antonio Lamer, Q.C. and Florence Storey, he will be sadly missed by his loving wife Daniele Tremblay-Lamer, his son Stephane (Yvonne Maringo), stepdaughter Melanie Berard (Guillermo Rodriguez), stepson Jean-Frederic Berard (Genevieve Bourbonnais), grandchildren Catherine, Stephanie, Anthony, Laurence, Alexandre and Emmanuel, his parents-in-law Marcellin and Laurette Tremblay, his sisters-in-law Louise and Ghislaine, his brothers-in-law Michel and Andre, as well as many friends. Born in Montreal, he was educated at College de Saint-Laurent and University of Montreal (LL.L.), called to the Bar of Quebec in 1957, practiced law, particularly with Mr. Philip Cutler and Mr. Jacques Bellemare, Q.C., was Associate Professor, Faculty of Law, University of Montreal, and Lecturer in criminology, founder of the Defence Attorneys' Association of Quebec, National Chairman of the Criminal Justice Section of the Canadian Bar Association, appointed to the Superior Court, December 19, 1969, elected Chairman of the Quebec Society of Criminology and member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Human Rights Foundation in June 1974, appointed Vice-Chairman of the Canadian Law Reform Commission in 1971 and Chairman thereof in April 1976, appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal, March 17, 1978 and to the Supreme Court of Canada, March 28, 1980, appointed Chief Justice of Canada, July 1, 1990, was Chairman of the Canadian Judicial Council, Chairman of the Advisory Council of the Order of Canada, Chairman of the Board of Governors of the National Judicial Institute, Member of the Privy Council of Canada, Honorary Bencher, Lincoln's Inn, London, 1990, received the Order of Merit, University of Montreal, 1991, was Knight of Justice, Order of St. John, 1993, Honorary Colonel of the Governor General's Foot Guards and was made Companion of the Order of Canada in 2001. His remains will lie in repose at the Supreme Court of Canada on Wednesday, November 28th from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Those who wish to bid him farewell and offer their condolences may do so on this occasion or at the Centre funeraire Cote-des-Neiges, in Montreal (4525, chemin de la Cote-des-Neiges), on Thursday, November 29th from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on Friday, November 30th from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The funeral service will be held on Friday November 30th at 1 p.m. at the Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral in Montreal.
