Derek Gordon Gregory Grant died of a heart attack in the early hours of October 6, 2007 at the age of 56. He was born in Englehart and settled in North Bay as a young man. He was a devoted employee at Boart Longyear for 38 years. Mr. Grant’s love for the outdoors was boundless and hunting was his annual passion. The change of seasons meant adventure for him and his family as they looked forward to long summer days and winter weekends at the cottage. He especially cherished these times with his four grandchildren as they brought endless joy to his life. Mr. Grant was physically active throughout his life and was a long time member of the North Bay Senior Men’s Fastball League. An ardent cyclist, his longest trip was made across Newfoundland He embraced every new pursuit with passion and commitment. His guitar playing was both a private and shared pursuit at many family gatherings and through song he passed on to his children and grandchildren memories of his mother and her passion for music. Mr. Grant is survived by his wife and best friend Geri Grant (née Caruso); children James Joseph of Sudbury and Gordon Gregory of Surrey, British Columbia; grandchildren Daniel, Meagan, Marley and Haley; siblings Christine (John Fiske) of Edmonton, Corrine (Mike Barrette) and Jeff (Rose) both of Kirkland Lake; mother-in-law Florence Caruso; Paul and Trevor Caruso to whom he was best friend and hunting buddy; and by many brothers- and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents Henry and Georgette (née Cayen) Grant; and father-in-law Joseph Caruso. Visitation will be at Hillside Funeral Services in North Bay October 11 from 2 until 4 and 7 until 9 p.m. The funeral mass is Friday, October 12 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter the Apostle Church. Interment is at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Peter The Apostle Church Food Bank in Mr. Grant’s memory will be gratefully appreciated by the family.
