SMALLMAN, Florence Hazel (Sue) - Following a brief illness at the age of eighty- one, Sue died peacefully in her sleep on January 8 at Kingston General Hospital with daughter Clare Grant and friend Alan Grant at her side. Sue was remarkable in many ways: a fine spinner and weaver, an accomplished gardener, a keen psychologist, an early riser and baker of bread for neighbours, a steadfast volunteer, an avid reader and a woman of great intellect, class and passion. With her cherished husband of forty years, Bev Smallman (who died in 2005), she raised sheep and chickens, kept bees and cats and dogs on the hobby farm they called Smallmanor. If there is a heaven (and Sue had her doubts) then everyone there has Bev and Sue Smallman as neighbours. Sue had many gifts, not least her unerring sense of discretion and diplomacy while voicing her own opinion. Sue was both gentle and refined, youthful and caring to the end, and she remained, all her life, grateful for even the smallest kindness. The list of those who will miss her dearly is long but includes the following: daughter Clare and her partner Don King, grand-daughter Jessica Christiaans, her husband Aaron Christiaans and great-grand-daughter Morgyn. Her brother, Francis Cook and wife Joyce. Step- daughter Sylvia Smallman, her daughter Kirsten Graham and husband Damien Graham, and their daughter Caitlin. The aforementioned Alan Grant and his wife Carol Grant. And many, many friends. A private tribute to Sue Smallman will be held in coming days, but the family wishes to thank the women of Elizabeth Cottage for their support and the staff at KGH's Connell 10 wing for their attentive care. Anyone wishing to do so could honour Sue Smallman's memory by contributing to the Canadian Cancer Society. 10955971
