ALTON, The Reverend Bruce Scott - Peacefully in the presence of family at St. Joseph's Health Centre on Tuesday, January 8, 2008 at 72 years of age. Predeceased by his beloved wife Carol (née Marsh). Loving father of Mary (and spouse Michael), Mark (Karen), Greg (Katya), and Sharon (Jeff). Cherished grandfather of Scott, Lee, Jesse, and Ariel. Son of the late George Wesley and Myrtle (née Scott) Alton, half-brother of the late George Jr. (“Jay“) and Gordon Walter Alton of Michigan. Bruce completed studies at SCITS (Sarnia), Huron College (University of Western Ontario), McGill University, and Stanford University, and taught for many years at Trinity College (University of Toronto). A specialist in the philosophy of religion, Bruce was the author of numerous scholarly articles, including his area of special interest, the study of self deception. An ordained Anglican minister, Bruce was active most recently through his long association with St. John's West Toronto. He was active in Anglican and ecumenical affairs, and for several years the host of CBC Television's Meeting Place. Raised an only child, Bruce grew his own family and embraced numerous extended families, including the Marsh family; his “brother in arms“, Don Ubell and family; his half- brothers, Jay and Gordon, and their families; and the academic, professional, activist, and spiritual communities that enriched his life. Bruce wrote his doctoral dissertation on the universality of the Golden Rule, “do unto others as you would have them do unto you“, and lived according to this rule and his core belief: that God is Love. Friends may call at the TURNER AND PORTER YORKE CHAPEL, 2357 Bloor St. W., at Windermere, east of the Jane subway, on Friday from 6-9 pm. A Memorial Service will be held at St. John's Anglican Church, 288 Humberside Ave., on Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 2 p.m. If desired, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society would be appreciated by the family.
