COOPER, Alexander John (Alex) Born Sept. 28, 1913 passed away Dec. 13, 2007 at age 94 at Haldimand War Memorial Hospital in Dunnville, Ontario. Alex is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Grace Lucille (nee Kieffer) and by sons Alex Jr., John (Archie), Ronn, Steve, Mike (Cathy), Clint (Patti) & daughter Lu (Tom Herman). Grandchildren Pilar, Liz, Garrett, Daryn, Kevin, Casey, Brian and Rylee. Alex lived a wonderful life and is greatly missed by his family. Born in Verdun, Alex was always physically active and played basketball and ran track in high school, specializing in the mile distance. He learned to play the piano and tennis from his mother. He played Junior Davis Cup and hockey on several teams. Alex attended McGill University, and took a position with Canada Steamship Lines. A veteran of WWII, he moved to Toronto, and was employed by Canadian National Railways, meeting Grace Kieffer at the CNR Tennis Club. He later became President of the Jamaica Tourist Board. Returning to the first love of his life, Alex again started teaching tennis. Managing the Strathgowan Tennis Club in Toronto, and then the North York Tennis Association, coaching was his passion. A long time member of the OLTA, and CPTA, Alex wrote tennis columns for The Don Mills Mirror and the Dunnville Chronicle for many years. Retiring from teaching at age 85, tennis was as he maintained, “a game you can play your whole life“. Alex's family would like to thank Dr. Scallan and the wonderful hospital and home support staff for all their care.
