PONTING, Marjory L. (née Hubbard) - 1922-2007 - beloved mother, grandmother and aunt, loyal friend and volunteer, faithful parishioner and philanthropist - on December 15, 2007 at The Carpenter Hospice in the embrace of her loving family. Predeceased by husband Murray and parents Maude and Albert, Marjory is survived by four children - Dr. Gail Payne (Peter) of Lindsay, Prof. J. Rick Ponting (Martha Root) of Calgary/Comox, the Reverend David M. Ponting of Brantford, and Glenn Ponting (Wendy DesJarlais) of Wisconsin. She was the proud and beloved grandmother of thirteen and great grandmother of nine, including two newborns who brightened her final days. She had seven nieces and nephews. A long time resident of Burlington, Ontario, Marjory was raised in Fredonia and Dunkirk, N.Y., and Welland, Ontario. She was a graduate of the University of Toronto in Occupational Therapy. Marjory took great joy in creating the Occupational Therapy service in the Psychiatric Unit of the Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital in the early 1970s. She valued highly her friendships from her OT days at U of T and retained an interest in the profession. A woman of strong intellect and high academic and personal standards, Marjory was renowned as the family grammarian. She and Murray put strong emphasis on the value of education. She enjoyed world travel and made a trip to her son's wedding in Calgary in June. In earlier years she enjoyed the Haliburton cottage where she created many happy memories for herself and her family. Theatre, the arts, and gardening were among her other interests. Inspired by a profound faith, Marjory's generosity and compassion were part of the very fabric of her life. Marjory was an active member of St. Matthew's Anglican Church, Burlington, for 57 years. She was thrilled to be awarded the Anglican Church's Order of Niagara for her decades of loyal service. Her deep spirituality, instilled in her children, gave her great peace during her final ordeal. Considerate almost to a fault, she was always putting others before herself. Throughout her life, Marjory volunteered in numerous organizations. Among these were St. Matthew's House and Chedoke Hospital's children's cerebral palsy programme. As a Telecare crisis line counsellor, she received the 25 Year Service Award. The family wishes to thank Marjory's many caregivers over the last few weeks, especially Dr. R. Cross, his colleagues, and the nursing staff at JBMH for their compassion and the fine quality of care extended to our mother. It was of great comfort to Marjory and her children to spend her final days among the caring community at the Carpenter Hospice. Visitation at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME, 485 Brant Street, (one block North of City Hall) Burlington, 905-632-3333 on Tuesday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral celebration and thanksgiving for Marjory's life at St. Matthew-on-the-Plains Anglican Church, 126 Plains Road East, Burlington, ON, L7T 2C3 on Wednesday, December 19, 2007 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Matthew's Anglican Church (above) or a community service or social justice organization of the donor's choice would be greatly appreciated. 10936202
