CROSSLAND, Marguerite Hilda "Peggy" CROSSLAND, Marguerite Hilda "Peggy" Marguerite Crossland passed away peacefully at Extendicare- Falconbridge on April 3, 2004 age 95. Born on March 2, 1909 in Yokohama, Japan, Peggy was the daughter of Albert Victor Francis and Catherine Emma Dorrell. She and the surviving members of her family left Japan after the Great Kanto earthquake of 1923 and settled in Vancouver, Canada. While training as a nurse in England, she met and married Charles Wilfred Crossland of Barrie, Ontario in 1934. The couple with their daughter, Dorothy, returned to Canada in 1936 and resided in Ottawa and the surrounding area. Daughters Anne was born in Ottawa, and Madeleine in Belleville. Peggy was an avid artist and studied under the artist Arthur Lismer of the Group of Seven. Her work was displayed in a regional showing at the National Museum of Canada in Ottawa. She sold over 100 of her paintings, and continued painting well into her 80's. After becoming a widow in 1962, Peggy also resumed her passion for travel, and traveled extensively around the world. In 1996 she left Ottawa and moved to Sudbury to be near her daughter, Anne. Peggy is survived by daughters Anne (Paul) Nelimarkka of Mississauga, Ontario, Madeleine (Dr. Herman) Samson of Plaquemine, Louisiana and son-in-law, Michael Bajorek, Ottawa; grandchildren Charles Samson, Los Angeles, Dr. Angela (Samson) wife of Dr. Ray McClure, St. Gabriel, Louisiana, Lisa Samson, New Orleans, Karina Nelimarkka, Mississauga, Ed Nelimarkka, Markham, Dmitri Bajorek, Ottawa, Robert Samson and wife Melissa, of Plaquemine, Louisiana. Peggy had five great-grandchildren as well, Abigail Samson, Carter Toole, Cecile McClure, Brady Samson and Connor Nelimarkka. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles W. Crossland, daughter, Dorothy (Michael) Bajorek, son-in-law Paul Nelimarkka and siblings Doris, Mable, Cyril, Rose and Daphne. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew and loved her. Special thanks go to the staff of Extendicare-Falconbridge for the care and love extended to her during her final years. LOUGHEED FUNERAL HOME, 252 Regent Street, Sudbury is in charge of cremation. Memorial Mass will be celebrated at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1887 Bancroft Drive, Sudbury, Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at 2 p.m. Interment in St. Mary's Cemetery, Barrie. (Friends may gather at the Church after 1:45 p.m. Tuesday).
