PHELAN, Sister Mary Elizabeth, CSJ (Sister Alphonsus) - Sister Alphonsus passed away suddenly on December 28, 2007. She was in the 68th year of her religious life. Sister Alphonsus was born in Chapeau, Quebec a daughter of the late William Patrick and Annie Josephine (Carroll) Phelan. Left to mourn her loss and celebrate her life among us are her Sisters in the Congregation and her sisters Margaret (Joseph) Duquette of Chapeau and Kathleen (Clarence) Turner of Sudbury as well as her sister-in-law Katie Phelan of Pembroke and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews and cousins. She is predeceased by her brothers Philip and William. Early in her religious vocation she was assigned to help out at Villa St. Joseph (orphanage) in Renfrew until she was asked to minister in the hospital and Marian Home in Radville, Saskatchewan which she did for twenty-one years. In 1962 she graduated from the Grey Nuns' School of Nursing which led her to assignments as head of the O.R. in Barrhead, Alberta as well as nursing in Campbell's Bay and Grace Hospital in Ottawa. She saw a need for Pastoral Care in Radville Saskatchewan so she studied in this field and returned to the West to fulfill this ‘most satisfying and rewarding ministry.' She was the last Pembroke Sister to leave Regina in April of 1998. After her retirement she kept active in Pembroke, helping the elderly Sisters in her Community. She will be fondly remembered for her faithfulness to prayer and serving the Lord with her gifts. Sister Alphonsus treasured her religious vocation and was an inspiration to all who knew her. Visitation at St. Joseph's Motherhouse, Pembroke on Sunday, December 30, starting at 3:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 31st, 10:30 a.m. at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse. Interment at St. Columba's Cemetery, Pembroke. Arrangements by the NEVILLE FUNERAL HOME, Pembroke. Condolences can be sent to csjadmin@csjpembroke.ca 10945318
