HOARE, Beverley (Bert) Ph.D. 1924 - 2007 -Passed away on Sunday, December 23, 2007 at the age of 83. He is survived by his loving wife and dedicated companion Eveline (Stroud, McConeghy). Stepfather of David McConeghy (Maria), Kathy Harrington (Tim) and Shelley Macari (Brian). Dear grandfather of Samantha and Joshua Harrington, Brittany and Lindsay McConeghy, Ryan and Brooke Macari. He will also be missed by his brother William Hoare and his sisters Sheila Thomson (Harry) of Ottawa and Alicia Brown (Late Richard) of Whitecourt, AB., as well as many nephews and nieces and friends. Bert served as a pilot in the RCAF during the Second World War. He later attended Queen's University where he graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering in 1949. Between 1949 and 1966 he gained extensive experience in the Mining Industry, working with such Companies as Falconbridge, Denison Iron Ore of Canada, Alcan and the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company. During this period he held Senior positions in Engineering Operations and Management. Notably, this experience led him to conclude that there was a very important need in the Mining Industry for Management of Mine Tailings Facilities, using sound Engineering Principles. In his characteristic and thorough manner, he decided to act upon this need. He enrolled at the University of Waterloo where he graduated first with a Masters Degree in Civil Engineering (Water Resources) in 1968 and followed this with a Ph. D. in Civil Engineering in 1972. His Thesis on Mine Tailings Management made him one of the most prominent Pioneers in this field in Canada. Following this second period of studies, Dr. Hoare joined the Federal Energy Resources and Mines Department and worked on Manuals of significant value to the Mining Industry. His experiences were widely sought as a Consultant and in 1976 he formed the Company MTI Mine Tailings International Ltd. whose clients included Mining Companies across Canada, the United States, and in various countries abroad such as Chile, Brazil and Guyana. All who knew or worked with Bert found him to be full of life, with a great sense of humor, keenly interested in Engineering and the world at large. His Engineering Peers knew him as a man of integrity and good judgment and a truly outstanding Mentor in Engineering. In the 80's while spending the winters in North Ft. Myers, FL. he and Ev. built a home and hangar at Pine Shadows Air Park where in the 90's he fulfilled a personal dream in building his own plane. The Seawind was a amphibious airplane which he finished building in 2002. Sadly he got to fly the Seawind for only 100 hours before the onset of the dreaded disease “Alzheimer's“ forced him and Ev to sell the house and the plane and move back to Canada. The family wishes to thank the wonderful people connected with the Community Care Access Centre, Red Cross, Marianhill in Pembroke and St. Francois Hospital in Barry's Bay. We also appreciate all the help given to us, deeds of kindness and support from our friends and neighbors over the past few years. Noted recognition goes to Bert's good friends and co-workers Fred Matich of Toronto and Dennis Netherton of North Bay. Cremation was handled by the Laundry Funeral Home of Eganville. There will be a Memorial in the Spring of 2008 to celebrate Bert's Life. Date and time will be inserted in the Eganville Leader. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or to the Endowment Fund at Grace Lutheran Church, Eganville, Ont. 10947790
