DOWHOS, Jean 2008-01-15 After a long and fulfilled life our mother, at the age of 92, passed away peacefully with her family at her side on January 12, 2008 at Pioneer Ridge in Thunder Bay. She was born in Fort William on September 20, 1915 and was a member of Corpus Christi Church. She is survived by her two children, Marian (Edward) Curtis, David (Renee) Dowhos, grandsons Shannon (Elinor) Curtis of Fort Frances, Dr. Paul (Vicki) Dowhos and great grandson Niko, sisters Julie Coskie and Stella Stadnyk (St., Louis, Missouri}, and brothers Morris Barabash and John Barabash (Ottawa) as well as many nieces and nephews here in Ontario, Missouri and California. She was predeceased by her husband John in 1975, her mother and father Peter and Mary Barabash, brother Walter Barabash and sister Cecilia Shewchuk. Jean attended St. Peter‘s Elementary School and St. Patrick High School. English was her first language but she was also fluent in Polish and Ukrainian. During her business career she was the Secretary/ Librarian at the Lakehead Technical Institute and the Librarian at St. Joseph‘s Hospital until her retirement in 1980. Mother was a great cook and gardener and her recipes are still cherished. She was a good swimmer and skater in her youth and when her children reached their teens she and her husband along with the children built a cottage at Lake Shebandowan. There they spent many summers enjoying boating, water skiing and fishing along with her family and grandchildren. She was an excellent seamstress and her home would often be filled with the noise of her sewing machine as she made another clothing article for some family member. After the passing of her husband , Jean continued to live in her home that she and her husband had built in 1937 on Ray Blvd. She continued to live there until 1999 showing much independence while maintaining her home and large garden in immaculate condition. After her retirement she travelled mainly in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, South America and the U.S.A. When at home she enjoyed entertaining many of her extended family and friends from both here and afar at her home. For the past seven years she resided at Pioneer Ridge where she received excellent care and attention. She cherished her visits there from both family members and friends. We thank the very caring and loving staff at Pioneer Ridge for helping mother during her stay there. Mother will be greatly missed by all of us. Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 18, 2008 when family and friends will gather in Corpus Christi R.C. Church for the Funeral Mass beginning at 10:00 a.m. celebrated by Rev. Alan Albao. Donations in memory of Jean Dowhos may be made to the St. Joseph’s Foundation. On-line condolences may be made at www.sargentandson.com
