Gregory Joseph BENNETT

BENNETT, GREGORY JOSEPH - While sitting home spending precious and loving moments with his wife, Jessie Olive (Gillcrist) Bennett, Gregory Joseph Bennett of St. Martins, occurred unexpectedly on Saturday January 19, 2008. Born 1920 in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Joseph Leonard and Mary Alice (Bourgious) Bennett. Gregory served in the Royal Canadian Army with the 8th Princess Louise Huzzers during WWII, serving overseas for five years. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch # 63. He worked as a caretaker for Big Salmon River Lodge for many years. Besides his devoted wife Jessie of 21 years, he is survived by sons, Donald Bennett (Margaret) of Blacks Harbour, Kenneth Bennett (Heather) of St. Martins, Edward (Ted) Bennett (Gail) of Bains Corner, Leslie Bennett (Debra) of St. Martins; daughters, Josie Deveau of St. Martins, Gwen Hazelwood (William) of Saint John, Winnie Saunders of Grand Bay-Westfield and Barbara Bennett of Moncton; step sons Bob Proctor (Gail), Stephen Proctor (Darlene) and John Proctor (Sue) all of St. Martins; step daughter, Daphne Stewart (Bev) of Hampton; 23 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; brothers, Walter Bennett of St. Martins, Harold Bennett (Edith) of Saint John, Frederick Bennett (Margaret) of Saskatchewan, Clifford Bennett (Marilyn) of St. Martins and Kaare Bennett (Doris) of St. Martins; sisters, Annie Brown (Eddie) of Saint John, Margaret Hayes (Fred) of Sussex, Theresa Drady of Saint John and Anita Bennett of Sussex; and several cousins, many nieces, nephews and friends. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Freda M. (Gurr) Bennett; sister, Rita Parks; and grandson, Gerald Deveau. Resting at St. Martins Baptist Church, 211 Main Street, St. Martins with visitations on Tuesday January 22, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held from the church on Wednesday January 23, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. A tribute to a veterans service will be held at the church on Tuesday evening at 6:45 pm. Following cremation a private family interment will take place in Mosher Hill Cemetery at a later date. The family would appreciate donations made to the Concerned Citizens of St. Martins or to the charity of the donor's choice.
