ROGERS, George Ray - (Veteran of WW II R.C.N.V.R., Retired Correctional Service of Canada, 35 yrs) After a tenacious battle with cancer Ray passed away at Kingston General Hospital on Friday, January 21st in his 83rd year. Ray, beloved husband of 50 years to the late Alece McCarey. Dear father to Kevin, Greg (Suzanne) and Richard (Denise) Cherished grandfather of Rhiannon, Adam, Kelsey, Melinda, Teresa, Thomas, Braeden, Colby, and Sydney. Dear brother of Dorothy Percival, Verna Haycock (deceased), Stanley Rogers (deceased) and Robert Rogers. In keeping with Ray's wishes cremation has taken place. A Mass of Remembrance will be held in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Palace Rd Kingston Ontario on January 25 at 11 am. Father Lynch officiating. A private family burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery at a later date. As a young man Ray joined the Royal Canadian Navy and served during the Battle of the Atlantic. After the war he joined the ranks of the Correctional Service of Canada, he was a member of the first Penitentiary Officer Training Course in 1948 and worked his way up to Ontario Regional Manager before he retired after 35 years of service. Ray had a life-long interest in sports, especially hockey and baseball. He was very proud of his contributions toward the creation of recreational facilities in Pittsburgh Township and his role on the first community sport and recreation committee. Upon retirement he enjoyed riding and raising horses on his hobby farm. He continued to enjoy lawn bowling, curling and golf well into 2007. In the Year Of The Veteran Ray was honoured to represent the Navy and take the Salute from the Troops on the dais in ceremonies of Remembrance and proud to read the Role Call of Ships that were lost in battle. At every opportunity Ray tried to educate and inform young people about the sacrifices of war and importance of peace.
