THOMPSON, Hugh Wm. - In loving memory of Hugh William Thompson, 77 years, who passed on Saturday, January 26, 2008 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital- Laurentian Site. Beloved husband for thirty- three years of Josephine (predeceased), loving father of Bill (wife Nicole) of Sault Ste. Marie, Bruce of Toronto, Beth (husband Bernie) of Ottawa, and Russ (wife Guylaine) of Garson. Special friend and companion of Shirley Sloan. Beloved son of Herbert and Agnes (predeceased). Dear brother of the late Gerald (wife Marion), Eleanor Musclow (husband Roy) Eric (wife Verna), Greta (husband Merv), predeceased by his sisters Belah and Marilyn. Grandfather of Natalie Vienneau (husband Claude), Renee, Nichelle Gardner (husband Adam), Rebecca (friend Tristan), William, Vanessa and Alissa. Great Grandfather to Josephine, Blake, Emma, Paige, Peyton and Hilary. He will be missed by his entire extended family and friends. Hugh was born in Ross Township and spent his early years in the Ottawa Valley, he moved to the Garson area with his parents at the age of ten. He attended L.J. Atkinson Public School. He was an industrious young man who always worked hard be it at the Scagnetti Bottle Works in Garson, delivering coal or fighting fires. He was generous towards his family. As a youth he was a member of the Army Cadets and he told stories of going to Fort George as a cadet. At nineteen years of age he built his own house and married his childhood sweet heart - Joise. Both he and Josie was involved with the 2nd Garson Wolf Cub Pack for many year and he was involved with the community in the Garson area. He was employed as a maintenance mechanic with Falconbridge Nickel Mines for forty years at the smelter operations. He was well liked by his co-workers for his hard work, knowledge, honesty and his sense of humor - he was not above playing the occasional practical joke. He attended St. Andrew's Catholic Church and was a member of the church choir for many years. In the years after Josie's passing, he had the good fortune to meet Shirley Sloan and she was a good companion and friend to him and a member of our family. He took great pride in his children and their accomplishments and becoming a grandfather and great grandfather completed him. He took great pride in his son Ron's political campaigns and would walk miles and knock on doors handing out leaflets. When he talked to his children, he would always end the telephone conversation with “I love you very much.“ and we know that he did. He was proud of us and we were proud of him and his family will love him forever. In lieu of flowers, donations to the ALS or Northeastern Ontario Region Cancer Center would be appreciated.
