Gordon MACLELLAND

R. Gordon MacLelland June 28, 1907 - May 14, 2004 MacLELLAND, R. Gordon - 96, Halifax. Born June 28, 1907, in West Galloway, Kent Co., N.B., passed away suddenly on May 14, 2004. He was a son of the late James and Margaret (Girvan) MacLelland. He was a commercial artist for 50 years, the majority of this time was spent at Simpsons Art Department and Maritime Photo Engravers. He was part owner of Romac Photoengravers and taught at the Nova Scotia Art College, he also illustrated many children's books including The Wee Folk. He was a skillful landscape artist and captured many beautiful shore scenes of Nova Scotia. Every Christmas season found Gordon creating a unique Christmas card for his family and friends. He appreciated music, especially classical music, and would often be heard playing his mouth organ. His early years in Halifax were spent in the choir of St. Matthew's United Church, and later as a member of Oxford Street United Church. His lifelong zest for physical fitness well into his 90s led to his being presented with a Life Membership from Nubody's Fitness Centre in Bedford. Because of this interest in weight training he was interviewed by CBC TV and Global TV as a "Super Senior". Joel Jacobson also captured this vitality in his newspaper column. He was a passionate reader and a keen student to the American Civil War. Gordon is survived by his wife, Gladys (Flemming); daughters, Jean Copeland, Ottawa; Catherine Morrison, Halifax; son, Robert, Halifax; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by brothers, David and Douglas; sister, Agnes Long. Cremation has taken place. A private family interment at a later date.
