SAVOIE, Edith Mary August 1st, 1912 - August 6th, 2004. It is with an equal mixture of joy and sadness that we, her children, announce the passing of our Mother. Born in Dundee, Scotland she emigrated to Canada with her parents (Harry and Anne Ryan) and her older brother (David) in 1919 to start a new life in Canada. Edith was a resident of Merritton from her arrival in Canada until the passing of her beloved husband Omer (Lefty) Savoie (February 8th, 1995), after which she went to live with her daughter in Mississauga. Our sadness is that our mother has gone on to her God and that we will no longer benefit from her counsel, guidance and humour. Our joy is that she lived her life to the fullest and is going to join her many family members and friends in the house God has made for her to live for eternity in His light. Her greatest tragedy, which left a scar on her heart, was the death of her eldest daughter Roseanne in 1961. Roseanne was the light of Mother's life and while time lessened her pain, time never healed her heart. She learned to live with her grief but Roseanne never left her daily thoughts. You have your wish to be with Roseanne and Dad and we are grateful to God for bringing you to them. Your faith in God and prayers has been answered and our promise to you has been fulfilled. During her long life she filled many different roles. Loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, protector, teacher, care giver and more. Of all these roles, she most cherished her role as wife, mother and grandmother, which was her calling. She raised her family with pride and dedication, never turning away from the daily challenges of a large family. There was also never a time any child or friend who needed a meal or a place to sleep or simply a warm and loving hug was turned away from her door. For all those people who benefited and saw in our mother what we came to know as her unyielding faith in God, her boundless love and compassion, we thank you Mother. Edith is survived by her children Terry and wife Phyllis in Tweed, Denis and his wife Gayle in Sarnia, Michael and his wife Anne in Toronto, Mary Catharine in Mississauga and Rosemary Oliver and her husband Douglas in Burlington. She is also survived and will be greatly missed by her grandchildren in whom Edith had immense pride for their many accomplishments. Gary and Derrick (sons of Terry), Kristy and Jana (daughters of Denis), David (son of Michael), Kate, Sara and Carolyn (daughters of Rosemary). She was also blessed with one great grandchild, Claire (daughter of Gary). All of these children have known the wonders of Edith and her undying love for them and lived in her light. She was an amazing mother, grandmother and great grandmother and we will never forget the lessons you taught us. Special thanks to the staff at McMaster Hospital and St. Joseph's Villa for their care and compassion. The family will receive friends at the Karl A. Hammond Funeral Home and Chapel, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Patrick's Church (Merritton) on Tuesday, August 10th at 10:00 am. Vigil Prayers will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 8:30 pm. Rite of Committal at Lakeview Cemetery, Thorold. If so desired, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. Published in the Windsor Star on 8/7/2004.
