FORTIN, Reverend (Major) Jean-Yves Priest of the Diocese of Pembroke Chaplain in the Canadian Armed Forces Reverend (Major) Jean-Yves Fortin died in Kingston, Ontario, on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the age of 45 years. He was the son of Remi Fortin and the late Gaetane Leblanc. Following his studies at St. Paul's Seminary, Ottawa, he was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop J.R. Windle on July 13, 1991, in paroisse Saint-Pierre, Fort-Coulonge, Quebec. He served as assistant at Temiscaming, and as pastor at Corbeil until he became a member of the Chaplaincy Services in the Canadian Armed Forces. During his studies in preparation for the priesthood, he joined the Naval Reserve. He then became the Chaplain in North Bay at the rank of Captain, and transferred to the Regular Force in 2000. He served in Pettawawa, Meaford, Gagetown, Haiti, and promoted to the rank of Major in 2005 when he was posted to the Royal Military College, Kingston, where he was serving at the time of his death. Fr. Fortin is survived by his father, Remi Fortin, and his step-mother Orvella Nadeau, his brothers Denis (Diane Kenney), Francois (Manon Cretes), Luc (Cathy Amyotte), his sisters Nicole (Claude Bechamp), Celine, his nephews and nieces who loved him greatly, Melanie, Charles, Julie, Isabelle, Sophie, Andre, Nicolas, Carl, Annie, Benoit, Michel, Louis and Jean-Luc as well as many aunts and uncles. There will be a ceremony of welcome of the body at eglise Saint-Pierre, Fort-Coulonge, Quebec, on Wednesday, May 7 at 2 p.m. Visitation until 5 p.m. and then from 7 to 9 p.m. The church will be open on Thursday, May 8 at 11 a.m. until the Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. presided by Bishop Michael Mulhall and assisted by Bishop Donald Theriault and many confreres. Rite of Committal to follow in cimetiere Saint-Pierre. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart Foundation or to paroisse Saint-Pierre would be greatly appreciated.
