BOWERS, Clifford Roy - of Peterborough and Toronto Ontario, passed peacefully Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at Extendicare in Peterborough. Cliff, was born in Toronto (or “Trawna“ as he insisted it be pronounced) in 1920. Cliff retired from the Globe and Mail in 1985 after 29 years on the editorial floor during which he held the positions of: Assignment Editor; Night City Editor; International Edition Editor and; Associate Editor, Report on Business. He also contributed many humorous articles, poems and book reviews. Cliff was a self-made man who had little formal education but went from being an iron-worker during the war to becoming a radio station operator, technician and announcer at stations in Ontario and Alberta including CFRB - Toronto and CKNX - Wingham. He then became a weekly newspaper editor in Brampton (Peel Gazette) and Port Credit (Port Credit Weekly) where he won an Ontario Weekly Newspaper Association Award for best weekly. Cliff was pre-deceased by his wife Dorothy (“Dot“), also of Peterborough, and is survived by his son Grant Bowers and daughter-in-law Sharon Tegart of Toronto. No memorial service will be held at his request and donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are welcomed.
