Blandford, R. Austin February 24, 1926 - June 12, 2008, age 82, of Amherst, Nova Scotia passed away Thursday, June 12, 2008 at High Crest, Springhill, after a lengthy illness. Born in Burin, Newfoundland, he was the son of the late Captain Maxwell and Alice (Cheeseman) Blandford. After immigrating to Canada, Austin served in the Royal Canadian Navy before attending Maritime Business College in Halifax. After working in the shoe business for Simpsons and Eatons in Halifax, Moncton, and Corner Brook, Austin moved his family to Amherst where he opened Blandford's Shoe Store. In later years he sold life insurance. Austin was president of the Moncton Y's Men's Club and Charter President of the Amherst Y's Men's Club where he was made a life member in 2004. He was a member of Lorneville United Church and served on a number of boards including the VON, the Cumberland District School Board, and the Drew Nursing Home. As a former Rotarian, he was actively involved with Camp Tidnish. Austin is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marion (nee Mills); son Bruce (Ron Atkinson) Toronto, daughters Anne and Lynn, New Glasgow; Joyce (Paul) Millman, Truro, and his adored grandchildren, Peter and Sarah Millman. He is also survived by his sisters Jean Smith, Kingston, ON; Marjorie Struss, Surrey BC; and his brother Max, Saskatoon, SK. He was predeceased by his brother Harvey. Cremation has taken place. His family will receive visitors at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church St., Amherst on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 2 p.m. from Campbell's Chapel with Rev. Steve Longmoore officiating. Interment will take place in the Lorneville Cemetery.
