HUGHES, John William (Taffy) Died quietly October 28, 2004 at the Township of Osgoode Care Centre in his 86th year. Born in Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales on March 29, 1919, Taffy joined the British Merchant Marine at the age of 15 and served in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. In search of a better life for his family, he emigrated to Canada in 1950, and worked in gold mines in Timmins, Ont., for many years before moving to Brampton, Ont., where he finished his working life as an employee of the city's Parks and Recreation Department. He was a long-standing member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 15 as well as a life-long racing pigeon enthusiast. He moved to Ottawa in 1996. Predeceased by his loving wife Violet (Middletown), his sisters Joyce and Kathleen Ivy as well as infant son, John, his father, John Richard Hughes, and mother, Ellen Mary Hughes (Sinnott). Survived by his son, Graham, as well as brothers Walter, in Yorkshire, England, Tommy, in Buckley, Flintshire, Wales, and sister, Mona, in England. Grampa will be deeply missed by his much-loved granddaughters Sylvia and Gwen. In keeping with his wishes, there were no funeral services. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be scattered off the cliffs of Arbroath, Scotland, where he scattered his wife's ashes 19 years ago. Memorial donations to the Township of Osgoode Care Centre, 7650 Snake Island Road, Metcalfe, Ont., K0A 2P0 would be appreciated. The Ottawa Citizen
