Caines, Otto Gordon, Mr. March 9, 1936 - August 31, 2008 - 72, Lake Echo, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2008, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Burgeo, N.L., he was a son of the late Emmanuel and Sarah Caines. He is survived by his loving wife, Jocelyn; stepsons, Blaine Thurber (Tara) and Chris Thurber, Dartmouth. He will be sadly missed by stepgrandson, Connor; stepgranddaughter, Kyla, and best friend, John. Otto also leaves to mourn sisters, Dulcie Loucks, Victoria; Agnes Engram, Halifax; brothers, Cyril (Mary), Annapolis Royal; Milton (Johanna), Dartmouth. He was predeceased by sisters, Mamie, Violet, Lelia, and Hilda. Otto served with the Canadian Armed Forces (Navy) for 25 years. He worked for several years with the offshore oil industry, followed by working for Penhorn Mall maintenance until his retirement in 1996. Family and friends were first and foremost in Otto's life and he often enjoyed gatherings with music and a little good cheer. His love of the outdoors included fishing and hunting with his many friends at Mooseland. He also enjoyed travelling, wood carving, darts and gardening. Cremation has taken place. Visiting will be held today from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Atlantic Funeral Home, 771 Main St., Dartmouth. Funeral service will be held in St. Augustine's Anglican Church, 2 Ponderosa Dr., Lake Echo, on Thursday, September 4, at 2 p.m., Rev. Debra Burleson officiating, with reception to follow in the church hall. Burial will take place at a later date. Donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
