Arthur John BYFORD

BYFORD, Arthur John (Art) Colonel (Ret'd) DFC & Bar CD 1919-2004 Peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, after a courageous battle with cancer on Tuesday, November 2, 2004. Predeceased by his first wife Florence Rae (1946). Survived by dear Jacqueline (nee Munroe) his loving and caring wife of 56 years. Three great children, Barbara Rae Miller (Michael deceased), Lynne Marie Byford (Martin Harvey) and Doctor Larry James Byford (Mary). Eight loving grandchildren, David, Shayna, Amy, Jonathan, Katie, Laura, Stephen and Sarah. Dear sisters Elsie May Linklater, Dorothy Sim, Betty Morris (Jack) and Edna Andre/Harding (deceased). Fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews. Art left the R.C.M.P. in 1941 to join the R.C.A.F. during World War II and became a pilot. He was a member of 419 R.C.A.F. (Moose) Squadron in Bomber Command and completed a tour of 35 operations over Germany (5 over Berlin) and other European targets. After World War II he served in many postings including a tour with 426 (T) Squadron (Thunderbirds) flying the hazardous North Pacific route during the Korean War, was Air Staff Officer with the United Nations Emergency Force Peacekeeping Headquarters in Gaza City, was Canadian National Military Representative at SHAPE Headquarters in France for 3 years and the Canadian Forces Attache in Prague, Czechoslovakia for 3 years. Friends may visit at the West Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 150 Woodroffe Avenue at Richmond Road on Thursday, November 4, 2004 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St Stephen's Anglican Church, 930 Watson Street, Ottawa on Friday, November 5, 2004 at 11 a.m. Burial to follow at Pinecrest Cemetery. Special thanks to Doctors Gerridzen and Pagliarello at the Ottawa Hospital Civic Campus for their professional and friendly care over the years. Many thanks also to the 6 NE staff of the Ottawa Hospital General Campus for their exceptional care and kindness during his last week.
