SCHOOLEY, Duncan M., Duncan Schooley passed away peacefully at Bella Senior Care Residence, in Chippawa on Sunday, October 10th, 2004, in his 94th year. Born 1911 in Ridgeway, ON, one of 6 children to twice widowed Ailsa May Schooley, proprietress o f the Merritton Post Office, instigating years of Duncan's service to the great town of Merritton. As a Charter Member of the Merritton Lion's Club and Past President, Duncan was a driving force in building the Merritton Swimming Pool (recently renam ed in his honour) and as Past President of the Red Cross he helped create a 'learn to swim' program free to all participants. He served as a volunteer fireman with the Merritton Fire Department, was a Past Master of Adanac Lodge #614 A.F. & A.M., and a member of Elm Street United Church since 1924. A skilled labourer, Duncan worked at Howsers and Clark Machines followed by 32 years at the Ontario Paper Company as a machinist and trouble shooter. Revered and respected by teammates and opponents a like as the 'skinny southpaw' with the sneaky curveball for the Merritton Senior 'A' ball team, striking out as many as 19 batters in one game. Although scouted by the majors, any thoughts of fortune and fame were easily relinquished in the company o f the beautiful girl from Thorold, Eileen Schlender. They enjoyed 59 years of wedded bliss until her passing in 2002 at which time Duncan became a resident of Shorthills in Fonthill, eventually moving to Bella Senior Care in Chippawa, for which his c hildren have only praise for their friendship, love and devoted care. Survived by his brother Will, proud children Arthur (Glenys), John (Rosemary), Joanne, Marylynn (Bob), 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren, all grateful for such a hardworkin g and caring patriarch. Known for his adage, "Leave the place a little better than you found it", Duncan can rest peacefully having had a long, productive and happy life. Due to the absence of a family member, the family will receive friends at the K ARL A. HAMMOND FUNERAL HOME AND CHAPEL, 26 Ormond Street South, Thorold on Wednesday, October 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at Elm Street United Church (11 Elm Street, Merritton) on Thursday, October 28th at 11:00 a.m. (Visi tation at church 10:00 a.m.) Interment at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens, Fonthill.
