Aucoin, Atlas G. -- Lord, let me wrap my arms around you, and rest my weary head on your shoulder, and take me to your kingdom. After a brief and courageous battle with lung cancer, Atlas died on Thursday, Dec. 29, 2005, at the age of 66. A native of Valverda, and a resident of Ventress, Atlas joined the U.S. Navy upon graduation from St. Joseph High School in 1960. A man who could fix anything, he served as a boiler technician in the U.S. Navy, rising to the rank of master chief. He served his country well during his 28 years in the military, including a tour of 18 months in Vietnam. Never one to sit still, when he retired from the U.S. Navy in 1988, he joined the University of Georgia as a mechanic. After 11‰ years with the university, he retired and moved to Ventress with his favorite companion of the past 30 years, his wife, Sieglinde, a native of Worms, Germany. He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Roads, the American Legion and the VFW until his illness. Atlas was a wonderful father figure and role model to their son, Gerald, who graduated from the University of Georgia in 2002. He also shared his wisdom, knowledge and humor with his two stepsons, Bobby and Andy Keegan. He was a giving husband, friend and confidant to his wife. He will be greatly missed by his immediate family, relatives and numerous friends, including two that he considered as brothers, Arthur Coker and Dan Mougeot. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gerald and Elizabeth Aucoin of Atlanta; two stepsons, Bobby Keegan of Walterboro, S.C., and Andy Keegan of Atlanta; five sisters and four brothers-in-law, Mary Alice Chustz, Gloria and Frank Legget, Julia and Lynn Stentz, Joyce and Alvin Dousay and Ida and Leonard Siler; and two sisters-in-law, Sherry Aucoin of South Dakota and Ingeborg and husband Erwin Richter of Nauheim, Germany. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jeanette and Ulyses Aucoin; brother, Kelly James Aucoin; sister, Jean Chauvin; brother-in-law, Preston Chustz; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Klara and Hans Gunther of Worms. Visiting at St. Mary's Catholic Church in New Roads on Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, from 10 a.m. until Mass of Christian Burial at noon, celebrated by the Rev. Bob Stine.
