Noemi Germaine Marie BARBIER

Noemi Germaine Marie Barbier Sirgo, 92, passed away surrounded by family members in Las Vegas, at 2:45 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005. She was a native of New Orleans, and resided in the Gentilly area for over 50 years. Germaine graduated from Ursuline Academy and became a registered nurse following her completion of training at Mercy Hospital. As befits a member of "the greatest generation", she regularly cast informed votes beginning in the 1930's; and was active in numerous organizations including the Sultanas, the Silhouette Club, the Foreign Policy Association of New Orleans, the French Union, St. James Major Catholic Church, St. Jerome Catholic Church and the Gentilly Garden Club; where she was renowned for her green thumb and advice concerning the growing of roses, azaleas and hydrangeas. Germaine was preceded in death by her husband, George Louis Sirgo, Sr.; father, Victor Marie Barbier; mother, Noemi Marie Turcan Barbier; and brother, Alexander Barbier. She is survived by her sisters, Mimi Bechtel of Friendswood, Texas, Jeanne Snyder of Alexandria Bay, N.Y.; son, George L. Sirgo, Jr.; and daughter-in-law, Joanne Zazulak of Fort Worth, Texas; son, Henry B. Sirgo of Lake Charles, La.; daughter, Sandra J. Sirgo of Las Vegas; five grandchildren, including Victor and Carlos Guia of Las Vegas; and seven great-grand-children, including Spencer and Madeline Guia of Las Vegas. She resided since Labor Day weekend 1998 at the Villa Maria Retirement Center to which she joyously anticipated returning to be with her fun-loving friends, until she took ill during evacuation from Hurricane Rita (relocated to Las Vegas). Germaine lives still in our hearts. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, support be given to the Hurricanes Katrina and Rita recovery effort. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 1811 Pueblo Vista Drive.
