PORTLAND - R. Louis Bergeron Sr., 67, of Portland, died suddenly in Haiti on Mar. 7, 2005.He grew up in Massachusetts with his adoptive parents and his twin sister Doris.He is survived by a daughter, Lizbeth Myshrall of Maine; three sons, George, now living in Georgia, and Rob and Andy, both of Maine; and also seven grandchildren.In later life Lou became acquainted with the family of his birth mother, Elizabeth Anignostou.He was an independent news reporter for many years and also worked for local radio and TV stations.In 1988 Mr. Bergeron founded 'Friends International,' a non-profit organization, to improve cross-cultural relations, aid those in need, and promote world peace through understanding. He carried out projects in Mexico, Latin America, and was working on one at the University of the Caribbean in Haiti at the time of his death. 'Friends' also had a sailing program, based in Portland, for challenged individuals.Lou was a member of the ManKind Project, an international men's organization. He held several positions with MKP at the local, regional and national levels.Lou was involved with cultural exchange programs with UNE. His volunteer activities included The Maine Philanthropy Center, Mediation with the State Attorney General's Office, Merrill Auditorium ushering, and for many years assisting at the Preble Street soup kitchen.He was a member of American Legion Post 0178, and also of Veterans for Peace.For several years Lou had resided in Portland with his companion and partner, Lyn Clarke.A memorial service will be held at Durham Friends Meeting House on June 25. Because of Lou's great love of sailing, there will be a committal at sea.
