Janie D. Blanchard , Suffolk -- Janie Dare Blanchard, 90, retired brigadier of the Salvation Army, died Sept. 13, 2005, in Smithfield. Born May 26, 1915, in Hertford County, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Willie and Allie Briggs Blanchard. Commissioned as an officer in 1938, Brig. Blanchard served the Salvation Army in several appointments in the Southern Territory. Her last appointment was Atlanta. Survivors include her nephews and nieces-in-law, Jack and Barbara King of Smithfield, Halford and Carolyn King of Shipman, Ronnie and Emily King of Suffolk, the Rev. James A. and Joy Blanchard Jr., of Oxford, N.C., the Rev. William Bradford Blanchard Jr. and Deborah of Kimball, W.Va.; and several great-nieces and -nephews. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory on Friday from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by a graveside service at noon in the Blanchard Family Cemetery in Gates County, N.C., conducted by Col. J.B. Matthews.
