Roy Daniel CHARLAND

Roy Daniel Charland passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2005, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born on December 25, 1917, in Detroit, Mich. He graduated from Mondovi High School in 1936, and was employed by American Can Company in St. Paul, Minn., in June of 1936.Roy went to work for Northern States Power in 1937 in Minneapolis. He was transferred to Eau Claire in 1938. After several promotions, he became operations supervisor of several hydro plants owned and operated by NSP-Wisconsin Division.On September 30, 1939, he married Irene West of Neillsville.Roy had many interests including travel, flying, fishing prospecting and panning for gold. He owned and operated three roller rinks and was a licensed real estate broker. He became a licensed pilot in 1941. On one trip in the early ’50s, he and his friend flew their one-engine Piper Cub to Cuba and back.Roy loved animals and had many pets.He retired from NSP in 1982, after 44 ½ years of service, at the age of 64 ½. After retirement, Roy and Irene enjoyed their winters in Mesa, Ariz. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary on September 30, 2004.He will be greatly missed by his family and friends and Boots. A special thank you to hospice for all their help and support.Roy is survived by his wife, Irene; son, David (Jan) of West Bend; daughter, Cheri of Eau Claire; brother, Lyal of Blaine, Wash.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his brother, Harold; and sister, Odetta.Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 17, 2005, at Smith Funeral Chapel, with Chaplain Dale Freburg officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the funeral chapel.In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the hospice program of Northwest Wisconsin HomeCare.Smith Funeral Chapel and Crematory is assisting the family.
