GAUDETTE, Russell Dehan "Dean" - was born August 5, 1923 and passed away October 6, 2005 with his loving family by his side. Dean was born in St. Paul, Minnesota. His parents, Bill and Helen Gaudette, preceded him in death along with his sister, Terry Lemma. Dean graduated from Harding High School in St. Paul. He attended the University of Minnesota, but left to join the Navy in WWII. He served in England and on Saipan. He completed the V12 program at Marquette University. After the war, he attended San Francisco State University, where he received his BA and MA in Education. He began teaching and later became a principal. He met his wife, Nancy, and they eventually re located to Spokane. He was a principal for School District 81 and finished his Doctorate degree at Washington State University. After receiving his Doctorate, he began working at Eastern Washington University as a professor and director of the Campus Laboratory School. He was chairman of the Faculty Senate and chairman of the Education Department. He eventually became the Dean of the School of Human Learning and Development until his retirement. Dean was filled with adventure and lived life to the fullest while touching the lives of everyone he met. Dean enjoyed hunting with Britt river rafting, golfing, flying, hiking, cycling, dancing, woodworking, sailing, and rowing his shell. He was an avid skier and was a member of the ski patrol at 49 Degrees North. He was very active with his church and served as an elder prior to his death. He believed education enhanced our lives and he was always learning, teaching and helping others. His caring for others even took him to Honduras on a Peace Corps Mission working as a volunteer. He also enjoyed volunteering for local nursing homes, Habitat for Humanity, the Valley Food Bank and the zoo. Dean was also a past board member of SAREA and past president of Knife and Fork. He and his wife, Nancy, traveled extensively upon her retirement, but hisfavorite times were spent at the family's lake cabin he built on Lake Coeur d' Alene. It was a time of love and fun activities with family and friends. Dean was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Nancy; his children and their spouses: Mark and Tara Gaudette of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jane and Steve Durant of Salt Lake City, Utah, Tammy and Andrew Hovren of Spokane WA. His grandchildren: Marky, Janise, Michael, Marie, Miller, Matthew, Steven, Alison, David, Michael, Robbie, Leah, Lonnie, Alexea and Madison; and his great-grandchildren: Abi, Tyler and Gabriella. Dean was also blessed with special nieces, nephews and extended family: John and Tanya Lemma, Nan Lem-ma, Brian and Diane Danielson, Anita Daniel-son; and sister-in-law, Alice Danielson. He had a wonderful sense of humor, generous heart and infectious smile. His wit and humor will be sorely missed, but not forgotten.
