HARWINTON - Irene Graveline Walters Cassidy, 83, formerly of Meriden, wife of the late John Joseph (Jack) Cassidy, died on Monday, Aug. 29, 2005 at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in Torrington.Born in Meriden on Oct. 20, 1921, the daughter of the late Ernest and Stacia (Stuca) Graveline, she had resided in Harwinton for the past five years. She graduated from Meriden High School and St. Francis School of Nursing, Class of 1942. Mrs. Cassidy was employed by the VA Hospital in West Haven from 1955 to 1981 and won several nursing awards while working there. She enjoyed reading and her nursing career.She is survived by a granddaughter, Holly Mensel Pond and her husband, George Biff Pond of Harwinton; three stepdaughters, Karen Petersen of Trumbull, Wendy Grobicki of Andover, Mass., Lori Busch of Simsbury; and a stepson, John Cassidy of Trumbull. She was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon Walters Mensel; and a son-in-law, James Mensel.The funeral will be held on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 11 a.m. at the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St., Meriden. Burial will be in Walnut Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to the Connecticut Humane Society, 701 Russell Road, Newington, CT 06111
