Ethel Bastien of Alta Loma, California, passed away on the 30th of June, 2005 at the age of eighty-seven from a stroke. Born Ethel G. Kennett on April 20, 1918 in Illinois, she married her college sweetheart, Henry Allen Bastien in 1939 and taught elementary school until comin g out West to Southern California in 1942, where she lived in the Pomona-Upland area for the rest of her life. She was an energetic and smart business woman who greatly helped her husband, Henry, in the establishing and running of a successful, industrial catering business, Spee-d Lunch. Among her many activities, her favorite was the Young Ladies Institute where she held many offices including the Grand President. She was attending a YLI convention in Modesto at the time of her death. But most of all, Et hel was devoted to her loving children Henry Jr., Joan, Stephen, and Dr. Michael; her grandchildren Lynn, Tonya, Stacy, Justin, Aaron, Renee, Jorden, Nicole, and Nathan; and her eight great-grandchildren, all of Southern California. She is further survived by her sisters Ruby, Patty and Lucille, and brothers John and Dwaine. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Ethel was the center of a close family unit, which extended beyond her own children, grandchildren, and siblings to nephews, nieces, and their families. Her loss is felt very deeply. A Vigil for Ethel will take place at St. Joseph Church in Pomona, California, on Thursday, July 7th at 7pm. Ethel's Funeral Mass will take place on Friday, July 8th at 9:30am at St. Joseph Church. After the Mass she will be interred at Holy Cross Cemetery in Pomona where she will be laid to rest with her beloved husband of 62 years, Henry, who preceded her in death in December of 2001. Todd Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, Ethel left special instruction for donations to be sent to the Felician Sisters of St. Joseph School in Pomona or The American Heart Association.
